Carter Ancestral Line - Part 1

The next set of posts follows my husband’s Carter ancestors from Clarence Carter who died in 1964 in Kansas back to Daniel Carter who was born in 1725 in Virginia and covers 6 generations.

I am researching this line to support a yDNA test and to try to document family trees that were passed down or previously published.  I am confident in the relationships back to Daniel.  Several researchers have looked for evidence of Daniel’s parents and he is most often linked to either Giles or Povall or Robert Carter, sons or grandsons of Giles Carter the immigrant.  Evidence for these relationships includes proximity, naming patterns and documents that show interactions between the families.  The most serious researchers, that is, those with actual sources, believe Giles to be the father.  Whichever of the men was the father, the yDNA trail would still lead back to Giles the immigrant.

However, years ago Tom had his DNA tested at 23andMe.  They don’t specifically do yDNA but they do give a paternal haplogroup.  Tom’s is R-M512 (also called R1a1a).  There is a Carter yDNA project on FamilyTreeDNA that has shared their results on a spreadsheet on their site.  Searching that spreadsheet for Giles, there are two participants who name him as an ancestor, and both are in the haplogroup I-M253 (also called I1-12)…not even close.

Now, there are a lot of Carter’s who share the R-M512 haplogroup, including one descendant of Daniel.  So the research question continues to be - who is the father of Daniel?

Possible scenarios:

The two testers who are associated with Giles in the DNA project have incorrect genealogy.

Daniel is the son of one of the other Carter’s living in colonial Virginia.

Daniel’s mother had a child from a previous marriage and then married into the Carter line.

Further yDNA testing would help to narrow the search.  There is a second yDNA project as part of the Carter Society focused on the colonial Virginia Carter’s, including Giles.  That project is private and would need an invitation to see the results.  Maybe down the line.  I also need to do more research on the descendants of Daniel’s other children.

A second research goal is to locate the land the Carter’s lived on.  For now, this is what I know.

Clarence Walton Carter (1882-1964) – Tom’s Grandfather

Clarence Walton Carter, son of Matthew and Martha, was born September 26, 1882 near Fayetteville, West Virginia.  While he was still a toddler, he moved with his parents to Miami County, Kansas.

His first marriage was to Birdie Farrel in 1906.  They had three children, Cecil, Myrtle and Wayne.  Wayne died at age one.  Family notes say they divorced around 1915 and that Birdie died in 1917.

On 5 Sep 1917, Clarence married Elizabeth Emmaline (Bessie) Whitaker who was born 2 Jul 1890 near Louisburg. Their first daughter, Clarice Nadine, died at birth.  They went on to have three more children, James, Riley and Martha. The family lived on the Matthew Carter farm and the children attended the rural Snake Den school.

As a young man, Clarence farmed, went with the wheat harvest crew, and attended an electrical course at Manhattan State College. He worked for over 40 years as telephone electrician in Louisburg and the surrounding community. Retiring in 1947, he and Bessie moved to Prescott, Arizona, returning to Louisburg in August 1957.

Clarence preceded his wife in death 27 Nov 1964.  Bessie died in 1974. Both are buried in the Louisburg Cemetery.

  1. Nancy, I don't understand your reluctance to accept the ancestry of Daniel Carter. Although Dna evidence is not considered proof in itself it does when combined with regular research serve to verify that the research was correct. You point out the Ages/Locations/Naming patterns and court record especially the Court case in which Our Daniel Carter went back to Henrico and testified with [ his Brother Giles Carter son of Poval Carter Sr] Giles Carter as a witness for Poval Carter Sr. So proven to have known each other and interacted combined with the Ydna Analysis: Giles Carter Jr b about 1688 has descendants testing as R1a1a group 2 with a terminal SNP from the Big Y test of R BY 202611. Which is an exact SNP match for the descendants of Poval Carter sr/ also Daniel Carter as my [Mike Carter] terminal SNP is also R BY 202611. I believe Poval Carter Sr. was the Son of Giles Carter jr. named after Giles Carter's wife Mary Poval further that Daniel was the son of Poval Carter Sr [naming a son Poval after him. The descendants of each of Daniel Carter's 3 sons also test R1a1a group 2 and if a big Y test was done they would show the same terminal SNP [ a big Y test on Tom's Ydna will show a terminal SNP of R BY 202611...do the test and you will know or accept the logic and save a few dollars]. No other Carter family but ours shows this Terminal SNP but ours. So exclusive to our family. This was also I believe the exact terminal SNP of Giles Carter Sr. of Henrioc va b. 1634. According to his will he claimed to have 2 sons Theodorick and Giles Carter jr. BUT only Giles Carter jr was his genetic Son Theodorick was a step son with a separate Ydna [Haplo group i[eye] one group 12. Proven by Giles Carter's will if you consider the wording and facts. NOTE he gives theodorick only 5 shillings and he is clearly stated as the older son at a time in Virginia law where the oldest son will automatically with or even without a will is entitled to all or at least the bulk of the Land in the testators estate and by this will Giles Carter jr. splits the estate/ house /land/ furniture/livestock with his mother [Hannah [sewell to my thinking) The existing law at that time Primogentre prohibited a person from Willing land to someone not blood related although land could be transferred outside a will by deed. Giles Carter sr did only give land to Giles Carter jr. by Will the land theodorick got was 50 acres by deed. Note also that William Sewell gave his entire estate to Giles Carter jr. only so proven as blood related. I believe grandson Meaning Giles Carter sr was married twice and both times to a woman named Hannah....two Hanna's. TRUE ...Giles Carter sr did also give Giles Carter jr, land by deed the date is published incorrectly however. Both Theodorick and Giles Carter jr received about 50 acres each by deed in the year 1698 this land was on Turkey Island creek and both plots adjoined each other. The Plantation split with his mother was likely the 800 acres [amount of land not stated in the will this is the amount i calculated he would own what he had received less what he and sold and traded] It could be less than that if i missed a deed, but some amount of land is necessary for the Plantation house to exist on right and this was by will given to Giles Carter jr. Theodoricks 5 shillings would buy a hoe at that time. So was Giles Carter Sr. mad at theodorick? No just the year before the will in 1699 he had given him 50 acres for Love and affection as the only consideration. In 1699 Giles jr. was about age 9 ~ 12 and Theodorick was at least age 24 but likely closer to age 40.
